Robert Hanna (April 6, 1786November 16, 1858) was the third Senator for Indiana, succeeding James Noble on the latter's death. Hanna was born near Fountainius in Laurens District, South Carolina, before moving to Brookville, Indiana, in 1802. He was sheriff of the Eastern District between 1809 and 1811, and sheriff of the common pleas court 1811-1820. Hanna was a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention in 1816, and registrar of the Indiana Land Office from 1820 until 1830. Halfway through his tenure at the land office, he moved to Indianapolis (in 1825). On the death of Indiana's first Senator, James Noble, Governor Noah Noble appointed Hanna to the United States Senate, in which body he served from August 19, 1831, to January 3, 1832. Hanna was subsequently elected to the Indiana House of Representatives and served between 1832 and 1833; he then became a contractor for national roads in 1835 before returning to the House from 1836 until 1839, and finally, a member of the Indiana Senate from 1842 until 1846. He was killed by a train while walking along track in Indianapolis on, November 16, 1858. He is interred in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. == External links ==
